Historical Recreation
In January 2009, MWC was approached by a U.S. veterans association to explore the viability of recreating a watch indistinguishable in appearance from the original models made by Hamilton, Bulova, and Benrus during the Vietnam War. We were provided with samples and original specifications. The result is a watch very close to the original, featuring a high-grade fully jeweled automatic movement with a hacking function. This movement, similar to the original 1960s hand-wound versions, includes a rotor to eliminate the need for manual winding, though it retains the capability for manual winding if desired.
The transition from a 17-jewel hand-wound movement to a superior 24-jewel automatic in 2015 was prompted by customer feedback. Many younger buyers were unfamiliar with hand-winding a watch, having grown up with quartz models, and even their parents lacked this knowledge. The self-winding mechanism offered an ideal solution to these issues.
The Benrus watch sent to us in 2009 was from 1965. Our homage watch is virtually identical, though we have incorporated design elements from other models of the era. Original watches are now almost impossible to find in good condition, but this watch is a very convincing recreation.
