Current NATO Pattern Quartz Military Divers Watch, Non Date Variant with Sapphire Crystal and 10 Year Battery Life
Description
SKU: DIV2001SSND/715LI
This watch, is technically identical to the dated version, which is allocated the NSN number 6645-99-157-3496 by the MOD (Ministry of Defence) codification agency, originates from models first produced by MWC between the early 1990s and 2004. While certain elements—most notably the dial—evolved during that period, the 1999–2001 pattern dial remains the standout design thanks to its exceptional legibility, clean layout, and excellent low-light performance. This model retains that proven dial configuration.
Over time, the watch has undergone a series of significant technical upgrades:
- Movement: Upgraded from the Ronda 705 (approx. 5-year battery life) to the Ronda 715li, extending battery life to around 10 years
- Crystal: Replaced hardened mineral glass with sapphire crystal, offering vastly superior scratch and shatter resistance
- Bezel: Improved from a 60/90-click system to a 120-click unidirectional bezel for greater precision
Due to these enhanced specifications, the watch has attracted attention from multiple procurement agencies and has been formally issued an NSN, making it available for supply to NATO forces worldwide.
The case design is based on a pattern originally developed by the renowned Swiss case manufacturer MRP S.A. in the 1970s. Aside from minor refinements, the design remains largely unchanged—a testament to its durability and functional excellence. Founded in 1953 by Marchand, Roth, and Petignat, and later acquired by Georges Hauert in 1979, MRP continues to operate independently under Patrick Hauert.
This case design has been widely used across the industry, appearing in models from Precista, Nilax, Elvia, Heuer (notably the 844-1 from 1979), and Chronosport (including the Sea Quartz 30 worn by Tom Selleck in Magnum P.I.). It remains in continuous production today and is also utilised by brands such as CWC. Its longevity—spanning over four decades—highlights both its historical significance and enduring practicality.
The overall design of this watch traces back to British MOD specifications. While the external appearance remains faithful to the original military issue pieces, the modern version benefits from substantial advances in materials and engineering, resulting in a watch that is visually authentic yet technically superior.

Sapphire Crystal – Why It Matters
Sapphire crystal is widely regarded as the premium material for watch crystals due to its exceptional hardness and resistance to scratching and shattering. In real-world use, the vast majority of cracked crystals occur in watches fitted with mineral glass—even when hardened. Sapphire significantly reduces this risk, making it particularly well suited to military, law enforcement, and active outdoor use.
The material is heat-treated during production to eliminate internal stresses and maximise strength, then typically finished with anti-reflective coatings for improved visibility. While more expensive than mineral glass, sapphire is now standard in higher-end watches—and even used in devices such as modern smartphones—due to its superior durability.
